Sailing across the Atlantic to the Caribbean with the ARC


Every year in November, the "Atlantic Rally for Cruisers" (ARC) sets off from Gran Canaria across the Atlantic to St. Lucia. This is a regatta for cruising sailors, aimed at providing participants with added safety. The journey takes between 2 and 4 weeks, depending on the size of the boat and wind conditions.

 


Many of the over 200 yacht owners participating decide long in advance to cross the Atlantic. Months before the start, the boats are made “blue water ready” through various modifications and upgrades. In addition to safety, the main focuses are power and water supply, automatic steering, and sail rigging. We are the owners of the "Aphrodite," a relatively heavy 13-meter sloop built by the Swedish "Najad" shipyard.


To ensure the fastest possible crossing, we plan to use a spinnaker and blister as additional headsails, so the boat will be sailed using a computer-controlled autopilot. Additionally, the crew requested a seawater desalination system to ensure we could still “stand each other” by the end of the trip. To generate the necessary amount of power, we chose a combination of a diesel generator (4 kW) from Fischer Panda and a solar system (340 watts). 


The diesel generator was intended to take on the bulk of the load in the morning, powering the battery charging, seawater desalination system, water heater, breakfast preparation, and bread baking. Once the sun was up, the solar panels produced enough power to maintain nearly all the ship's operations throughout the day. In hindsight, this proved to be the perfect combination.
