Fischer Panda powers sustainable offshore racing

Fischer Panda powers Malizia

Strategic partnership delivers high-performance, low-emission energy system for world-class racing yacht Malizia - Seaexplorer

Fischer Panda, global expert in mobile energy and propulsion solutions, is proud to play a key role in Team Malizia’s commitment to cleaner offshore racing. After a comprehensive winter refit, Boris Herrmann’s IMOCA yacht Malizia – Seaexplorer returns to the water equipped with a custom hybrid-electric system with a Fischer Panda generator at its core. Certified to run on hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO), the generator is designed to operate only when needed and delivers up to 50% less fuel consumption compared to conventional diesel units.

Fischer Panda powers sustainable offshore racing: HVO-ready generator integrated in hybrid system aboard Team Malizia

Aboard Malizia – Seaexplorer, the future of sustainable energy is already a reality.

Complementing the Fischer Panda unit, the hybrid system features a 48V Molabo ARIES i50 electric motor, a high-capacity battery bank from Solid State Marine, as well as solar and hydro power sources. Together, the components form a resilient energy architecture that allows for zero-emission operation under most conditions and a reliable fallback when additional power is required.

“On top of looking at a more sustainable solution for motoring, we looked at how a hybrid solution could work with our renewable energy sources onboard, and how we could get the most out of our solar panels and hydrogenerators,” says Jesse Naimark-Rowse, Technical Advisor to Team Malizia. “That meant looking at energy storage.”

The extended battery capacity allows the vessel to operate through the night without activating the generator. When backup energy is needed, the Fischer Panda HVO-compatible generator ensures safe, quiet and sustainable operation with a significantly reduced environmental footprint.

“This project clearly demonstrates where the market is heading and how Fischer Panda is actively shaping that direction,” explains Dr. Sven Soetebier, CEO of Fischer Panda GmbH.

“We are proud that our compact and lightweight generator systems enable pioneering teams like Malizia to push the boundaries of sustainable offshore racing. With their proven reliability, clean fuel compatibility, and smart integration, our solutions create the space – physically and technologically – for innovation, data collection, and future system development. The demand for scalable, low-emission energy systems is accelerating, and we are already delivering what forward-thinking customers need today and tomorrow.”

From today's portfolio to tomorrow’s solution: Generator systems built for the future

The Fischer Panda generator installed aboard Malizia – Seaexplorer is not a custom-made unit, it’s a proven product from our current portfolio. This real-world application shows that Fischer Panda’s solutions are already meeting tomorrow’s demands: low-emission, quiet, reliable, and compatible with sustainable fuels like HVO.

What powers Team Malizia’s offshore racing yacht is also available as a scalable system for shipyards, OEMs, and fleet operators. It reflects Fischer Panda’s broader strategy: delivering mobile, modular energy systems based on tried-and-tested technology – ready for integration into future-oriented, digitalized setups.
